Over 80000 online images mainly photographs but some prints, drawings etc, illustrating the history of Manchester from the early 1800s onwards. It includes street scenes, buildings, people. The bulk of the online collection consists of c50000 images taken by the Manchester Amateur Photographic Society c1950-72 on behalf of the library. These are primarily street scenes of all the districts of Manchester showing the city before the slum clearances of the 1960s. There is also a 1892-1900 survey by the same Society consisting of c280 images of Manchester buildings/streets of the time. There are some notable Victorian images, such as those by Samuel Coulthurst and James Mudd. There are also c60000 images that are not digitised; these are primarily of the areas/towns beyond the City of Manchester, in the Greater Manchester/Lancashire/Cheshire areas.

Mon-Thurs 9am-8pm Fri-Sat 9am-5pm The online collection is of course always available to the public. The non-digitised prints would need to be ordered in advance and possibly retrieved from an off-site location.
